I used to think that when problematic thoughts floated through my mind, I was somehow just torturing myself. Maybe it was even on purpose, I thought.
I am a person with a positive outlook on life, though. So, when I discovered that the rotten guy from hell was persecuting me, I decided to fight back. How do you fight back I thought.
Well, it is with God’s words and his promises. This is why I try to study the Bible each day so I know what Jesus would be saying to me if he were standing right here.
Having Google on my phone and my iPad helps me find the right verses for whatever concerns me. I just put a word in and ask for a verse about that.
Ephesians 6:16 reads, “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.“NIV
Sometimes I find a short verse that addresses my need. I then write it on an index card and try to memorize it so that when an attack of evil comes my way, I can just think the verse. To me, this is like having my boxing gloves on and being in the ring with my opponent lying on the ground.
I will tell you, when the hatred and adversity of the devil start reminding me of certain temptations, my first instinct is to get angry. And then there are times when he tries to send me in the direction of what’s not good for me. Often, this concerns sweets. I am in the process of losing weight, and I like to keep my sweet intake to a minimum. Other times, an I-don’t-care attitude creeps in and tries to get me to avoid working out.
If I don’t have a verse for a specific issue at the time, I just say the above verse.
Thank you for reading.
I love you,
Lisa Brown
