When I did not know what to say to someone who was perplexed and having trouble, the words came to me.
Matthew 10:20 reads, “For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” ESV
I did not know how I was able to comfort a person, not sure of the plan, but after reading the above verse, I did. I let the person, we’ll call him Luke, know that we can search the Bible app or google and find answers to all of our concerns in God’s word. In addition, I said Jesus loves you and all of his children, and that uncomfortable seasons do not last forever,
I suggested that maybe taking on a creative project might be helpful and pass the time. A bonus is, if a project helps someone else it is even more powerful. What that does is it takes a focus off your concerns and redirects energy to others.
Somehow, when you see another person benefit from your help it lifts you up and can help you relax so that it’s then possible to view your own issue from another perspective.
One afternoon, I couldn’t move beyond something that made me feel short changed, so I reached out to another friend who had trouble surrounding him. When I heard myself speaking in an encouraging manner (thank you Holy Spirit), it in turn inspired me.
I was having a pity party over a situation that occurred some time ago. I had been ruminating on it and rehearsing in my mind how terrible it was. Then one day I thought about what Jesus says in the Bible about how all things work together for good for those who love him. I was so angry, that it took me a while to see the good that was beneath it all. Once I did, it changed things. I felt healed of the pain.
If you would like to help, and have no one who needs a hand, volunteering at a soup kitchen or a food pantry run by a church or a nonprofit, could be a choice to consider.
Another way to offer assistance to others is to donate unused items to a charity thrift store. This way you can do some decluttering, clean things up, and help others out as well.
Thank you for reading,
I love you,
Lisa Brown
